The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
