Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.
