The British driver Lando Norris Wins Debut F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Race Victory.
In a display of gutsy racing, the McLaren driver has clinched his first F1 world title by taking third place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, despite the fact that Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

With this his maiden world championship, Norris is now the 11th driver from Britain to achieve this. For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for a large part of the season, there was clear frustration at stumbling in the final third. Several of difficult weekends and some errors, including a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having shown he is also world champion material. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.
Max Verstappen was also brilliant to take the title battle to the wire. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just a handful of points behind.
Sealing the Deal with Clinical Precision
He secured his success with clinical focus to win the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two races. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.
This represents no little achievement for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the squad even during some difficult times, believing they would return to the top. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars at once, climbing to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, almost completely off the track.
This moment was investigated by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his title fight.
Diverging Fates
While Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.
His first season with the Scuderia had been met by excitement but has yielded what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will look to rebuild over the winter.
