Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
