New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
