Israelis observe second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war management of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home now and until every captive return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she added.
Near the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"We are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff reported.
