Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

This situation come after this month's bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been activated for the coming days in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The mix of extremely dry land and relentless heat creates a volatile situation for firefighters.

Global Weather Extremes Cause Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The stormy weather also caused major transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Substantial damage to power systems is anticipated to cause further issues as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Fog Covers Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a valley known for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by exceptional autumn rainfall that resulted in soils waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Tourist Destination

Turning to another country, a weather system has ushered in intense rainfall, strong gales and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm brought some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snow, fierce winds from the north swept across the archipelago, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The influence of the storm is forecast to ease this week with more typical conditions returning.
