Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
