The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to reference the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The sport is embarking on what is potentially the largest technical shift in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased energy storage, driving key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, competitors will carefully oversee ERS energy – including during flying laps – to achieve the best result.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terminology would improve understanding of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to present a set of intricate technical aspects of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in favor of descriptive names that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the system.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that drivers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules feature a series of modes that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to enhance the fans' insight of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power available when a driver is less than a second the vehicle in front to facilitate an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – flattening on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and angling down in the corners for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: Drivers can harvest energy with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the end of straights or in sections where only partial power is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a car length cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize active aerodynamics – both wings will move on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and return into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will retain the current rim size, but the rubber compounds will be slimmer, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The new power units will have an approximate 50-50 split in power produced by the petrol engine and the ERS, up from about one-fifth electric power this year.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey unit that generated electricity from the turbo.

Cars will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, created from plant-based materials or lab-created processes.
