A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
